Overheating is the failure mode that keeps steam iron OEMs up at night. It doesn't just scorch a customer's shirt. It degrades the soleplate coating, warps internal components, pressurizes the steam chamber beyond design limits, and in the worst case, creates a safety hazard that triggers a recall.
The thermostat is the component standing between normal operation and that outcome. And in most steam irons, that thermostat is a KST snap-action device.
The Overheating Problem in Steam Irons
A steam iron soleplate typically runs between 100°C and 200°C, depending on the fabric setting. But the heating element doesn't know what fabric it's pressing against. It just converts electricity to heat. If the thermostat fails to cut power at the right temperature, the soleplate keeps climbing.
At 230°C, most non-stick coatings begin to break down. At 250°C, plastics in the handle and steam chamber start to soften. Above 300°C, you're in territory where UL 60335-2-3-the safety standard for electric irons-requires the thermostat to prevent ignition of materials in contact with the soleplate.
The thermostat's job is simple to describe: cut power when the soleplate reaches setpoint, restore it when temperature drops. But doing that reliably over 100,000 cycles, in a high-humidity environment, without drifting, is where the engineering lives.
How KST Thermostats Respond
A KST thermostat uses a bimetallic disc-two metals with different thermal expansion rates bonded together. As the soleplate heats, the disc heats with it. At a specific temperature, the differential expansion causes the disc to snap from one shape to another. That snap physically opens the electrical contacts, cutting power to the heating element.
When the soleplate cools, the disc snaps back, contacts close, and heating resumes.
The key word is "snap." A KST thermostat doesn't gradually open its contacts as temperature rises. It switches instantly. That instant action eliminates the slow creep that plagues capillary thermostats, where fluid expansion takes time to trigger the switch. By the time a capillary thermostat reacts, the soleplate has already overshot the setpoint. KST doesn't have that lag.
Why That Matters for Soleplate Protection
Three characteristics of KST thermostats directly address the overheating risk.
Fast response. The bimetallic disc responds to temperature changes in seconds, not minutes. When the user turns the dial from "wool" to "linen," the soleplate heats up and the thermostat cuts power at the new setpoint without overshooting into damaging territory.
Adjustable setpoint. KST thermostats are adjustable-the user's temperature dial changes the mechanical preload on the bimetallic disc, shifting the switching temperature. That means the same iron can run at 110°C for synthetics or 180°C for cotton, and the thermostat prevents the soleplate from exceeding whichever setpoint is selected.
Consistent tolerance. A quality KST thermostat holds switching tolerance to ±5°C across its production batch. That consistency matters because the iron's safety certification is based on a maximum soleplate temperature. If the thermostat drifts, the safety margin shrinks.
What Prevents Drift Over Time
Thermostat drift is the slow, invisible killer. A unit that switches at 180°C when new might switch at 195°C after 20,000 cycles. The user doesn't notice until fabrics start scorching.
KST thermostats resist drift through their contact design. Silver alloy contacts handle the arcing that occurs each time the switch opens under load. Plain silver or copper contacts erode faster, changing the contact gap and altering the switching temperature. Silver alloy contacts maintain their geometry over 100,000 cycles, which is the UL-recognized lifespan for this class of thermostat.
The housing material matters too. Heat-resistant bakelite or ceramic keeps the bimetallic disc aligned and protects it from moisture ingress-critical in a steam iron where humidity inside the handle can reach saturation.
What OEMs Should Verify
When specifying KST thermostats for steam irons, don't just accept the datasheet. Ask for:
Batch calibration data – not just the nominal tolerance, but the distribution across a production run
Cycle test results – switching temperature before and after 50,000 cycles
Contact material specification – silver alloy, not plain silver
Shaft rotation angle – must match your dial's travel from low to high
We've seen OEMs skip these checks and end up with a thermostat that passes incoming inspection but drifts in the field. The cost of that mistake shows up in warranty claims.
