In data centers and industrial facilities, cooling can account for a significant portion of the total energy demand. In extremely cold regions, however, the outdoor environment itself can become an important cooling resource.
This is the principle behind free cooling.
In cold-climate locations such as Mongolia, free cooling devices can use low outdoor air temperatures to remove heat from data centers, industrial equipment, and other temperature-sensitive systems. Instead of relying entirely on mechanical refrigeration, the system uses outdoor cold air and heat exchangers to provide efficient heat dissipation.
At the heart of this process is precise temperature monitoring. NTC temperature sensors are frequently used to detect temperature conditions, monitor temperature differences, and help control dampers and fans.
What Is Free Cooling?
Free cooling, also called economizer cooling, uses naturally available low-temperature outdoor air to reduce the cooling load on mechanical refrigeration systems.
A typical free cooling system may include:
- Outdoor air intake
- Air filters
- Heat exchanger
- Supply and return air ducts
- Fans
- Motorized air dampers
- Temperature sensors
- Control system
When outdoor conditions are suitable, the system can increase the use of outside cold air and reduce or even avoid compressor-based cooling.
This can significantly improve energy efficiency, particularly in regions with long cold seasons.
Why Is Free Cooling Important in Mongolia?
Mongolia has a strongly continental climate, with long and very cold winters. These environmental conditions create favorable opportunities for natural cooling applications.
For facilities such as data centers, telecommunications rooms, industrial control rooms, and equipment shelters, cold outdoor air can become a valuable source of cooling capacity.
Instead of continuously generating cooling through refrigeration, a free cooling system can take advantage of the temperature difference between the indoor environment and the outside air.
The greater the usable temperature difference, the more effectively the system can reject heat without relying heavily on energy-intensive mechanical cooling.
Why Are NTC Sensors Used?
An NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient) thermistor is a temperature-sensitive resistor whose resistance decreases as temperature increases.
Because of their high sensitivity, compact size, fast response, and cost-effectiveness, NTC sensors are widely used for temperature measurement and control.
In free cooling systems, NTC sensors can be installed at different locations to continuously monitor operating conditions.
Typical measurement points include:
- Outdoor air temperature
- Return air temperature
- Supply air temperature
- Heat exchanger inlet temperature
- Heat exchanger outlet temperature
- Equipment or cabinet temperature
This temperature information allows the controller to determine whether free cooling is suitable and how much airflow is required.
How Does an NTC Sensor Help Control Free Cooling?
The basic control principle is relatively simple.
Step 1: Monitor Outdoor Temperature
The NTC sensor measures the outdoor air temperature and sends the temperature signal to the controller.
When the outdoor temperature is sufficiently low, the controller can identify that free cooling is available.
Step 2: Compare Indoor and Outdoor Temperatures
The system compares the outdoor temperature with return-air or equipment temperature.
This temperature difference is critical because it indicates how much cooling potential is available from the outdoor environment.
Step 3: Adjust the Air Damper
When free cooling conditions are favorable, the controller can open the motorized air damper and increase the flow of cold outdoor air.
When outdoor conditions become unsuitable, the damper can be adjusted or closed to prevent unnecessary heat exchange.
Step 4: Control Fan Operation
Temperature feedback can also be used to regulate fan speed.
When the cooling demand is low, the system can reduce airflow and fan power. When more cooling is required, the fan can increase airflow accordingly.
This coordinated control helps minimize unnecessary energy consumption.
Why Is High-Accuracy Temperature Measurement Important?
Free cooling systems often operate based on relatively small temperature differences.
A temperature sensor that is inaccurate or slow to respond may cause the control system to make inappropriate decisions.
For example, the system could:
- Introduce too much cold air
- Reduce airflow too early
- Keep mechanical cooling running unnecessarily
- Fail to respond quickly to changing outdoor conditions
Using an appropriately selected high-precision NTC sensor helps improve the reliability of temperature feedback and allows the control system to react more accurately to changing conditions.
NTC Sensors and Ultra-Low-Power Cooling
The real advantage of free cooling is not simply using cold outdoor air. It is using it intelligently.
A well-designed system can coordinate:
Temperature sensing → Controller → Air damper → Fan → Heat exchange
NTC sensors provide the temperature feedback required for this control loop.
When outdoor conditions are sufficiently cold, the system can maximize natural cooling and minimize compressor operation. At the same time, fan speed and damper position can be adjusted according to the actual cooling requirement.
This creates a more efficient cooling strategy instead of simply running the cooling equipment continuously.
Application in Industrial Cooling
Free cooling is also applicable to industrial environments.
Examples include:
- Electrical control cabinets
- Telecommunications equipment
- Battery rooms
- Industrial automation systems
- Power electronics
- Outdoor equipment enclosures
- Machinery cooling systems
In these applications, NTC sensors can provide continuous temperature feedback for automatic cooling control.
Conclusion
In cold-climate regions, free cooling provides an effective way to turn naturally available low outdoor temperatures into cooling capacity.
For data centers and industrial cooling systems, NTC temperature sensors play an important role by continuously monitoring outdoor and indoor temperatures and providing feedback to the control system.
By combining accurate NTC temperature sensing with intelligent damper and fan control, free cooling devices can maximize the use of natural cooling while minimizing unnecessary mechanical cooling and fan energy consumption.
For regions with long cold seasons, such as Mongolia, this approach offers an important pathway toward lower-power, higher-efficiency cooling systems.
