When a Chromalox tubular heater needs replacement, matching the voltage and wattage is only the first step. Tube diameter, heated length, overall dimensions, bend configuration, sheath material, terminal design, and installation conditions can all affect compatibility.
JAYE Heater Technology manufactures custom tubular heating elements and can review replacement requirements based on original drawings, samples, or technical specifications. This page provides a practical cross-reference between Chromalox tubular heater configurations and JAYE manufacturing options.

1. Chromalox Tubular Heater Types and JAYE Cross-Reference
Chromalox offers several tubular heater configurations, including round, triangular, flat-pressed, formed, and finned tubular elements. Different structures are designed for different heat-transfer and installation requirements.
| Chromalox configuration | Typical application | JAYE cross-reference |
|---|---|---|
| Round tubular heater | Air, liquid, and surface heating | Straight or formed tubular heating elements |
| Formed tubular heater | Ovens, dryers, tanks, and custom equipment | Custom-bent tubular heating elements |
| Finned tubular heater | Forced-air and gas heating | Finned tubular heating elements |
| Single-ended tubular heater | Molds, metal parts, and selected immersion applications | Custom terminal and lead configurations, subject to design review |
| Flat-pressed tubular heater | Applications requiring a larger contact surface | Requires drawing-based feasibility evaluation |
The cross-reference identifies possible manufacturing directions, not confirmed drop-in equivalents. Final compatibility depends on the original heater design and operating conditions.
2. Technical Specifications: What Can Be Matched?
Chromalox's published tubular heater information provides useful reference points. Its standard tubular range includes diameters from approximately 0.200 to 0.475 inches, standard voltages of 120, 240, and 480 V, and standard watt densities of 3–53 W/in².
The product range also includes different sheath materials and terminal configurations. [1][2]
JAYE manufactures straight and formed tubular heating elements, with options for different tube dimensions, electrical ratings, sheath materials, and terminal structures. Finned tubular elements are also available for forced-air heating applications.
| Parameter | Chromalox published reference | JAYE manufacturing options |
|---|---|---|
| Tube diameter | Approx. 0.200–0.475 in. | Customized to design |
| Voltage | Standard 120 / 240 / 480 V; other ratings available | Customized according to requirements |
| Watt density | Standard 3–53 W/in² | Evaluated according to application |
| Sheath material | Copper, steel, SS304/316, INCOLOY, and others | SS304, SS316, SS321, INCOLOY 800/840, copper, and other options subject to review |
| Shape | Round, triangular, flat-pressed, formed | Straight, formed, and finned configurations |
| Termination | Multiple terminal and lead options | Customized terminal and lead arrangements |
These figures describe published product ranges, not a guarantee that every combination is available or interchangeable. JAYE's final specification must be confirmed against the actual drawing and application.
3. Which Chromalox Replacement Projects May Be Suitable for JAYE?
Round or formed tubular heaters
For equipment using straight or bent tubular elements, JAYE can review the original dimensions, bending shape, heated section, cold section, and terminal arrangement. These heaters are commonly used in industrial ovens, dryers, liquid tanks, and metal heating applications.
Chromalox Fintube heaters are designed for air and gas heating. Fins increase the heat-transfer surface area and can help reduce sheath temperature under comparable airflow conditions. JAYE also manufactures finned tubular heating elements for forced-air applications. [3][4]
For this type of replacement, the fin dimensions, spacing, tube diameter, airflow, and installation arrangement should be checked.
Single-ended designs place the electrical connections at one end, which can simplify installation in certain applications.
JAYE can review the terminal arrangement and mechanical structure to assess whether a corresponding custom design is feasible.
4. What Should Be Checked Before Replacing a Chromalox Heater?
A replacement heater should be evaluated from four aspects:
- Electrical: Rated voltage, wattage, resistance, phase, and wiring arrangement.
- Mechanical: Tube diameter, overall length, heated length, cold section, bend radius, and mounting dimensions.
- Material: Sheath material, operating temperature, and compatibility with the heating medium.
- Thermal: Watt density, airflow or liquid circulation, heat-transfer conditions, and required operating temperature.
A heater with the same voltage and wattage may still have a different surface temperature or heat distribution if its dimensions or watt density change.
Therefore, the replacement should be checked against the actual working conditions.
5. Information Needed for a Replacement Assessment
To review a Chromalox tubular heater replacement, please provide:
- Original Chromalox model number or part number.
- Heater drawing or clear photos, including the terminal end.
- Voltage and wattage.
- Tube diameter, overall length, and heated length.
- Material and terminal requirements, if known.
- Application and working environment.
- Required quantity.
An original sample is also helpful when a drawing is unavailable.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can JAYE directly replace a Chromalox tubular heater?
JAYE can evaluate and manufacture custom tubular heating elements based on the original design. Direct interchangeability should only be confirmed after checking the electrical, mechanical, thermal, and material requirements.
Can JAYE manufacture a replacement based on a Chromalox part number?
A part number is a useful starting point. However, a drawing, specification sheet, or sample is preferred to verify the exact dimensions and configuration.
Can JAYE replace Chromalox finned tubular heaters?
JAYE manufactures finned tubular heating elements for forced-air applications. The tube size, fin geometry, power rating, airflow, and mounting arrangement need to be reviewed before confirming feasibility.
