Choosing a heating element for commercial food warming equipment depends on more than its rated power. The heater must fit the equipment structure, transfer heat effectively and work with the required temperature control system.
Silicone heaters and tubular heaters are two options that equipment manufacturers may consider. Both convert electrical energy into heat, but their construction and installation requirements are different. Understanding these differences can help you choose a suitable heating solution for food warming carts, heated holding cabinets and other commercial catering equipment.
How Are Silicone Heaters and Tubular Heaters Different?
A silicone heater uses a resistance element embedded between layers of silicone rubber. Its thin, flexible construction allows it to be made in different shapes and sizes to suit a specific mounting surface.
A tubular heater typically consists of a resistance wire enclosed in a metal sheath with electrically insulating material between the wire and the sheath. It is a rigid heating element that can be manufactured in straight, U-shaped or other configurations, depending on the design.
The main difference is how each heater is constructed and integrated into the equipment.
Silicone Heater vs. Tubular Heater: A Side-by-Side Comparison
| Comparison | Silicone Heater | Tubular Heater |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | Flexible heater with silicone rubber insulation | Rigid heater with a metal sheath |
| Shape | Can be customized into different flat shapes | Commonly straight, U-shaped or formed to specification |
| Installation | Often mounted onto a suitable flat surface | Usually installed using brackets, clips or dedicated mounting features |
| Space requirements | Suitable for low-profile installations | Requires space for the tube profile and mounting arrangement |
| Heat transfer | Commonly transfers heat through contact with a mounting surface | Transfers heat through the sheath to the surrounding surface, air or other medium |
| Customization | Dimensions, shape, wattage and lead configuration can be specified | Tube diameter, length, shape, voltage and wattage can be specified |
| Typical applications | Flat panels, surfaces and equipment requiring flexible heating | Air heating, metal components and applications suited to rigid heating elements |
Actual performance depends on heater design, installation, power density, operating conditions and the construction of the complete appliance.
When Is a Silicone Heater a Better Choice?
A silicone heater is worth considering when the equipment requires a thin heating element that can fit closely against a flat panel or mounting surface.
For food warming carts, it may be suitable for designs in which the heater is integrated into a cabinet panel or another designated part of the heating assembly. Its flexible structure can also help equipment manufacturers work around space limitations.
Common reasons to consider a silicone heater include:
Limited installation space: A low-profile heating element may be easier to integrate into a compact cabinet design.
A customized mounting area: The heater can be designed around the available surface dimensions.
A specific wire exit position: Lead configuration can be defined according to the equipment layout.
A flat-surface heating arrangement: The design may suit applications where heat needs to be transferred through a mounting panel.
However, a silicone heater is not automatically the best option for every food warmer. The mounting surface, required temperature, moisture exposure and electrical protection must all be assessed.
When Is a Tubular Heater More Suitable?
Tubular heaters may be preferable when the equipment design requires a rigid metal-sheathed heating element.
For example, some food warming equipment uses tubular heaters as part of an air-heating assembly. Other designs may use them to heat a metal component or a dedicated heating surface.
A tubular heater may be worth considering when:
The equipment already has a mounting arrangement for a rigid heater.
The heating design requires a formed tube or a specific tube layout.
Heat needs to be delivered through the metal sheath to air or another suitable medium.
The design calls for a heating element that can be mechanically supported at defined points.
The exact suitability depends on the tubular heater's sheath material, surface temperature, watt density, mounting method and intended operating environment.
Which Heater Works Better in a Food Warming Cart?
There is no universal winner. The right choice depends on how the cart is designed and how heat needs to reach the food-holding area.
Consider a silicone heater when a low-profile, flexible element is needed for installation against a suitable panel.
Consider a tubular heater when the design calls for a rigid heating element, such as one incorporated into an air-heating assembly.
Before making the decision, equipment manufacturers should review the cabinet dimensions, insulation, target holding temperature, heat distribution requirements and available installation space.
It is also important to distinguish between the heater's own temperature and the desired temperature inside the cabinet. The heater may operate at a different temperature from the food-holding area, depending on the heat transfer path and control arrangement.
Prototype testing can help confirm whether the selected heating system reaches the required conditions within an acceptable time and maintains the intended temperature during normal operation.
What About Temperature Control and Safety?
Neither a silicone heater nor a tubular heater necessarily includes a temperature controller as standard. Temperature regulation may require a separate thermostat, sensor or electronic controller, depending on the equipment design.
The control system should be selected alongside the heating element. Sensor location matters because the temperature measured near the heater may differ from the temperature elsewhere in the cabinet.
For commercial food warming equipment, also consider:
Overtemperature protection where required by the design
Appropriate electrical insulation and grounding arrangements
Protection of wiring and connections from moisture and cleaning procedures
Suitable mounting and strain relief for lead wires
Applicable appliance safety and food service requirements
The complete appliance-not just the heating element-must meet the relevant safety requirements for its intended use.
Can JAYE Heater Customize Silicone Heating Elements?
JAYE Heater provides customized heating solutions for equipment manufacturers and industrial customers. For applications where a flexible heating element is preferred, a silicone heater can be designed around the available installation space and electrical requirements.
Depending on the project, customization may include:
Heater length, width and shape
Rated voltage and wattage
Lead wire length and exit position
Mounting method, subject to design review
Requirements for temperature control and the installation environment
To help us assess your food warming equipment, please share the heater dimensions, available voltage, target wattage, intended operating temperature and a drawing or photo of the installation area.
If you are still comparing silicone heaters with tubular heaters, the equipment layout and heat transfer requirements are useful starting points for discussing the most appropriate solution.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are silicone heaters more efficient than tubular heaters?
Not necessarily. Efficiency depends on the complete heating system, including heat transfer, insulation, control strategy and operating conditions. The heater type alone does not determine overall energy consumption.
Can tubular heaters be used in food warming carts?
Yes, they may be suitable for certain designs, particularly where a rigid heating element is required. The heater configuration and installation must match the equipment's operating conditions and safety requirements.
Can a silicone heater be attached directly to stainless steel?
It may be possible when the heater, mounting method and surface conditions are suitable. The installation should follow the supplier's instructions, including any requirements for surface preparation and temperature limits.
Which heater is easier to install?
A silicone heater may be convenient for a suitable flat mounting surface, while a tubular heater may suit equipment with dedicated brackets or tube supports. Installation difficulty depends on the equipment layout
