PT100 and PT1000 are two widely used platinum resistance temperature sensors (RTDs) for industrial temperature measurement. Although both sensors use the same basic principle, they have different resistance values and electrical characteristics, which can affect measurement accuracy, wiring requirements, and compatibility with temperature controllers.
For heating equipment, ovens, HVAC systems, industrial machinery, and process control applications, understanding the difference between PT100 and PT1000 can help engineers select the right temperature sensor for their system.
What Is a PT100 Temperature Sensor?
A PT100 is a platinum RTD with a nominal resistance of 100 ohms at 0°C. As temperature increases, the electrical resistance of the platinum element increases in a predictable and nearly linear manner.
For example, a standard PT100 with a temperature coefficient of 0.00385 Ω/Ω/°C has a resistance of approximately 138.5 ohms at 100°C.
Because of its stable characteristics and reliable temperature measurement, PT100 sensors are widely used in:
- Industrial heating equipment
- Ovens and furnaces
- Plastic processing machinery
- HVAC systems
- Food processing equipment
- Industrial process control
What Is a PT1000 Temperature Sensor?
A PT1000 works according to the same RTD principle as a PT100, but its nominal resistance at 0°C is 1000 ohms.
With the same 0.00385 temperature coefficient, a PT1000 has a resistance of approximately 1385 ohms at 100°C.
The higher resistance means that the resistance change caused by temperature variation is approximately ten times greater than that of a PT100.
This makes PT1000 sensors particularly useful in applications where minimizing the influence of lead-wire resistance is important.
PT100 vs. PT1000: Key Differences
| Feature | PT100 | PT1000 |
|---|---|---|
| Resistance at 0°C | 100 Ω | 1000 Ω |
| Sensor type | Platinum RTD | Platinum RTD |
| Temperature coefficient | Typically 0.00385 | Typically 0.00385 |
| Resistance change | Lower | Approximately 10× higher |
| Lead-wire influence | More significant | Less significant |
| Common wiring | 2/3/4-wire | 2/3/4-wire |
| Typical applications | Industrial temperature measurement | Precision and equipment temperature monitoring |
Why Does Resistance Matter?
The main electrical difference between PT100 and PT1000 is their resistance level.
Suppose a sensor cable introduces 1Ω of resistance. For a PT100, this represents approximately 1% of its nominal resistance at 0°C. For a PT1000, the same 1Ω represents only about 0.1%.
Therefore, PT1000 can be less sensitive to errors caused by lead resistance, particularly when longer cables are used.
However, this does not automatically mean that PT1000 is always more accurate. Sensor accuracy also depends on the sensor element, tolerance class, wiring configuration, measuring circuit, controller, and installation conditions.
2-Wire, 3-Wire, and 4-Wire PT100/PT1000
The wiring configuration is another important consideration.
2-Wire RTD
A 2-wire configuration is simple and economical, but the resistance of the connecting wires is included in the measurement. This can introduce additional measurement error.
3-Wire RTD
3-wire RTDs are widely used in industrial applications. The wiring arrangement allows the measuring system to compensate for much of the lead-wire resistance.
4-Wire RTD
4-wire configuration provides the highest measurement accuracy because the measurement circuit can effectively eliminate the influence of lead resistance.
For demanding industrial temperature measurement applications, a 3-wire or 4-wire configuration may therefore be preferred.
Which Is Better: PT100 or PT1000?
There is no universal answer.
PT100 may be a better choice when:
The existing controller is designed for PT100.
The application uses standard industrial instrumentation.
PT100 sensors are already used throughout the equipment.
The system requires compatibility with existing temperature-control components.
PT1000 may be a better choice when:
The control system supports PT1000.
Longer sensor cables are required.
The system needs a higher resistance signal.
Lower sensitivity to lead-wire resistance is beneficial.
The equipment uses modern electronic temperature measurement systems.
The most important point is controller compatibility. A PT100 and PT1000 should not normally be considered direct replacements for each other unless the temperature controller or PLC supports both sensor types.
How Are PT100 and PT1000 Used With Heating Elements?
PT100 and PT1000 sensors are commonly installed together with electric heating elements to create a complete temperature-control system.
For example, in an industrial oven, the heating element generates heat while the RTD sensor measures the actual temperature inside the equipment. The temperature controller then adjusts the heater according to the sensor signal.
This closed-loop system can help maintain a stable operating temperature and reduce the risk of overheating.
For customized heating systems, PT100 or PT1000 sensors can be designed with different probe diameters, probe lengths, cable types, connection methods, temperature ranges, and mounting configurations according to the equipment requirements.
How to Choose the Right RTD Sensor?
Before selecting a PT100 or PT1000, engineers should confirm several parameters:
- Temperature range
- Required accuracy
- PT100 or PT1000 compatibility
- 2-wire, 3-wire, or 4-wire configuration
- Probe diameter and length
- Cable length and insulation material
- Installation method
- Temperature controller or PLC specifications
Choosing the sensor based only on the temperature range is not enough. The sensor must also be electrically compatible with the control system.
Conclusion
PT100 and PT1000 are both reliable platinum RTD temperature sensors, but their different resistance values give them different electrical characteristics. PT100 has a nominal resistance of 100Ω at 0°C, while PT1000 has a nominal resistance of 1000Ω.
PT100 remains a popular choice for general industrial temperature measurement, while PT1000 can offer advantages where higher resistance signals and reduced sensitivity to lead-wire resistance are required.
For heating equipment manufacturers, selecting the appropriate RTD should be based on the temperature range, accuracy requirements, wiring configuration, installation conditions, and controller compatibility.
