Watlow FIREBAR® and JAYE's flat tubular heater are structurally comparable products-both are flat-geometry tubular elements using a resistance wire in MgO insulation within a metal sheath, and JAYE has explicitly produced FIREBAR-equivalent parts to customer drawings. The meaningful differences for an OEM are in published specification depth, certification path, lead time structure, and price transparency. Watlow publishes detailed temperature and watt-density ceilings with UL/CSA recognition documented under UL 499; JAYE offers competitive customization with a stated 15–20 day lead time for most custom orders, but certification and final pricing must be confirmed per specification. Neither is universally "better"-the right choice depends on whether your procurement model prioritizes documented certification out of the box or faster turnaround and lower tooling cost on a custom flat-element design.
Specs Comparison: Watlow FIREBAR vs. JAYE Flat Tubular Heater
Watlow FIREBAR: Published Specifications
Watlow's FIREBAR is a flat tubular heating element available in single-ended and double-ended constructions, with 1-inch or 5/8-inch height options. The flat geometry packs more power into shorter elements and improves the boundary layer for heat transfer compared to round tubular heaters.
Sheath materials and temperature limits:
304 Stainless Steel: maximum operating temperature 650°C (1200°F)
Alloy 800: maximum operating temperature 760°C (1400°F)
Maximum watt density (both sheath options): 9.3 W/cm² (60 W/in²)
The flat surface is designed to operate at a higher watt density than a round tubular element without increasing sheath temperature, and in many cases at a lower sheath temperature for the same wattage.
Certification: Watlow holds UL Recognition (File E52951, UL 499) and CSA recognition for FIREBAR elements, with specific coverage depending on sheath material, end seal, and assembly configuration. UL/CSA must be requested at the time the order is placed-it is not necessarily automatic.
JAYE Flat Tubular Heater: Published Specifications
JAYE's flat tubular heater line includes products explicitly described as "flat firebar tubular" elements, positioned as a direct structural alternative to round tubular heaters for limited-space, high-contact applications.
Published specification range:
Voltage: 110V / 220V / 380V, or customized
Power: 100W – 3000W, or customized
Sheath material: SUS304 / SUS316 / Incoloy 800/840
Insulation: high-purity MgO
Shape: straight or custom bending
JAYE has documented a production run of a FIREBAR-equivalent flat tubular heater at 240V, 3500W, 5.8mm thickness × 25.4mm width, formed to customer drawing. This dimensional profile corresponds closely to the Watlow FIREBAR 1-inch height configuration.
JAYE also states that its flat tubular elements can be used for surface charges of 1 to 10 W/cm² for heating liquids, gases, and solids-a range that brackets Watlow's published 9.3 W/cm² ceiling.
Specs Comparison Table
| Parameter | Watlow FIREBAR | JAYE Flat Tubular / Flat Firebar |
|---|---|---|
| Geometry | Flat tubular, 1" or 5/8" height, single- or double-ended | Flat tubular / flat firebar; straight or custom bending |
| Sheath materials | 304 SS, Alloy 800 | SUS304, SUS316, Incoloy 800/840 |
| Max operating temp (SS304) | 650°C (1200°F) | Not separately published by sheath grade |
| Max operating temp (Alloy 800/Incoloy) | 760°C (1400°F) | Not separately published by sheath grade |
| Max watt density (published) | 9.3 W/cm² (60 W/in²) | Stated application range 1–10 W/cm² |
| Power range (published) | Not stated as a single range; application-specific | 100W–3000W standard, custom available |
| Voltage | Application-specific; up to 480–600 VAC depending on configuration | 110V / 220V / 380V standard, custom |
| Certification | UL Recognized (File E52951, UL 499); CSA available on request | Custom configurations; specific agency recognition to be confirmed per order |
What the table shows: The structural envelope is very close. The difference is in published granularity. Watlow publishes temperature ceilings by sheath grade and a single maximum watt-density figure. JAYE publishes a broader application watt-density range and a standard power band, but does not break out maximum temperature by sheath material on its public product page. For an OEM engineer, Watlow's data is easier to drop into a design review without a follow-up request; JAYE's data requires a specification conversation to pin down the exact limits for a chosen sheath and geometry.
Lead Time Comparison
Watlow FIREBAR Lead Time Structure
Watlow's lead time varies significantly by order type and configuration.
Standard stock or distributor inventory: some FIREBAR and WATROD items ship in 3–5 business days from authorized distributors.
Screw plug heaters (FIREBAR and WATROD based): Watlow states five-day or less lead time on many screw plug assemblies, with same-day/next-day expedite available at a premium.
Made-to-order FIREBAR / FINBAR configurations: typically 4–5 weeks, with options and complexity affecting availability.
The practical pattern: if your specification matches a distributor's stocked part, Watlow can be very fast. If it requires a custom flat-element build, plan on roughly a month.
JAYE Lead Time Structure
JAYE states a 15–20 day turnaround for most orders, supported by vertically integrated production. For standard custom projects, the stated lead time is 15–20 days. JAYE also supports low MOQ and sample production for prototype and development work.
For a custom flat tubular heater-the scenario most comparable to a made-to-order FIREBAR-JAYE's stated 15–20 days is shorter than Watlow's stated 4–5 weeks for made-to-order configurations. That gap is the single most concrete operational difference visible in the public data.
Lead Time Comparison Table
| Order Scenario | Watlow FIREBAR | JAYE Flat Tubular |
|---|---|---|
| Stocked distributor part | 3–5 business days (if available) | Not applicable; JAYE builds to order |
| Standard custom / made-to-order | ~4–5 weeks | 15–20 days |
| Expedite option | Same-day/next-day available on some assemblies at premium | Not publicly stated |
| Prototype / low-volume samples | Standard sample process through rep | Supported; low MOQ for development |
Cost Comparison
Watlow FIREBAR Cost Signals
Public price points for Watlow FIREBAR elements span a wide range depending on size, wattage, and configuration:
A single FIREBAR element listed at starting from $110.00 on a distributor site.
A 1-inch diameter, 240V, 4000W FIREBAR listed at $525.00.
A FINBAR forced-air heating element listed at $26.40 for a low-wattage configuration.
Larger flanged assemblies built around FIREBAR elements start in the thousands of dollars.
These are distributor list prices, not OEM volume pricing. They establish that Watlow FIREBAR sits in a premium-priced position relative to commodity tubular elements, with the price reflecting the flat geometry, published certification, and brand supply chain.
JAYE Cost Positioning
JAYE positions its flat tubular heaters as "competitive price" from a direct factory source, with customization and low MOQ for development. The company does not publish list prices; pricing is quoted per specification (quantity, size, power, voltage, drawing).
For an OEM, the cost comparison therefore hinges on two variables that cannot be resolved from public data alone:
Unit price at your annual volume for the specific flat geometry, wattage, sheath, and termination you need.
Total landed cost including tooling, freight, inspection, and the certification/testing work required to qualify the part in your end product.
JAYE's low MOQ and sample support reduce the upfront development cost of evaluating a custom flat element. Watlow's published UL/CSA recognition can reduce the compliance work required if your end product needs agency-recognized components without additional testing. The cheaper part at the unit level is not necessarily the cheaper part at the system level.
Cost Comparison Framework
| Cost Factor | Watlow FIREBAR | JAYE Flat Tubular |
|---|---|---|
| Published list price | Available at distributors (range roughly $110–$525 for individual elements, higher for assemblies) | Not published; quoted per specification |
| OEM volume pricing | Negotiated through Watlow sales / distribution | Quoted directly by factory |
| MOQ | Distributor stock: 1 pc; custom: per agreement | Flexible / low MOQ for development |
| Tooling / setup for custom geometry | Built into made-to-order pricing | Quoted per drawing; competitive factory-direct structure |
| Certification cost burden | UL/CSA recognition largely in place; must be requested at order | Agency recognition to be arranged or confirmed per project |
| Total landed cost driver | Predictable but premium unit cost |
Lower unit cost potential, offset by qualification and certification effort |
FAQ: JAYE vs. Watlow FIREBAR Flat Tubular Heater
Are JAYE flat tubular heaters dimensionally interchangeable with Watlow FIREBAR?
In at least one documented case, yes. JAYE has produced a 5.8mm × 25.4mm flat firebar tubular heater at 240V, 3500W, formed to drawing, which corresponds to the Watlow FIREBAR 1-inch height profile. Dimensional interchangeability for a specific part number should be confirmed against the drawing, not assumed from the category name.
Which supplier publishes a higher maximum watt density?
Watlow publishes 9.3 W/cm² (60 W/in²) as the maximum watt density for FIREBAR elements across both 304 SS and Alloy 800 sheaths. JAYE states an application range of 1–10 W/cm² for flat tubular elements. The upper ends are close; the practical limit depends on sheath material, fluid, and flow conditions in your application.
