If you are designing a steam iron, you have almost certainly encountered both KST and KSD thermostats in supplier catalogs. They look similar-both are mechanical bimetallic switches, both are compact, both are inexpensive. But they serve fundamentally different functions, and choosing the wrong one can mean either a product that fails to meet user expectations or a product that fails safety certification.
We have been making both KST and KSD thermostats for appliance OEMs at Jaye Heater for over a decade. Here is what we have learned about when each one belongs in a steam iron design.
The Fundamental Difference: Regulation vs. Protection
The single most important distinction between KST and KSD is their primary function.
A KST thermostat is an adjustable temperature controller. Its job is to maintain a user-selected temperature within a defined range. The user turns a dial, the dial changes the mechanical preload on a bimetallic element, and the thermostat switches on and off to hold the soleplate at that temperature. KST thermostats are available in flashing (snap-action) and slow-action types, and they generally find use in electric irons, high and low switchgear, and other applications where temperature regulation is required.
A KSD thermostat is a fixed-temperature protector. Its job is to cut power when a specific, pre-calibrated temperature is reached-typically as a safety limit. The switching point is set at the factory and cannot be changed after manufacture. KSD thermostats use a butterfly-shaped bimetallic disc and are found in household appliances, automotive diesel filter heating, disinfection cabinets, and welding machines.
Why This Matters for Steam Irons
Steam irons have two distinct temperature control needs, and they map directly onto these two device types.
Need 1: User-adjustable temperature regulation. A steam iron must handle everything from delicate synthetics to heavy cotton. The user needs to select the right temperature for the fabric at hand. That requires an adjustable thermostat-a KST.
Need 2: Safety cut-off. If the primary thermostat fails, or if the iron is left unattended with the soleplate against a flammable surface, something has to cut power before a fire starts. UL 60335-2-3, the safety standard for electric irons, requires protection against abnormal operation. That requires a fixed-temperature safety device-a KSD.
Most well-designed steam irons use both. The KST regulates temperature during normal operation. The KSD sits in the circuit as a secondary safety limit, calibrated to trip at a temperature above the KST's maximum setting but below the point where the soleplate or surrounding materials would be damaged.
The Decision Framework for OEM Designers
When you are laying out the temperature control architecture for a new steam iron, ask these questions:
1. Does the user need to change the temperature?
If the answer is yes-and for a steam iron, it almost always is-you need a KST. KSD thermostats are fixed at manufacture and cannot be adjusted by the user. A steam iron with only a KSD would operate at one temperature, which means it would scorch some fabrics and fail to press others.
2. Where is the critical temperature point?
A KST thermostat senses temperature locally-at the bimetallic disc, which is mounted near the soleplate. A KSD thermostat also senses locally, at its own disc. Both are compact, self-contained devices that mount directly in the iron. Unlike capillary thermostats, neither requires a remote bulb or tubing, which simplifies assembly and eliminates the risk of capillary tube damage during production or use.
3. What certifications does the design require?
KST thermostats for steam irons are typically available with UL, TUV, and CQC certifications. Common electrical ratings are AC 250V/10A and AC 125V/16A, with temperature setting ranges from 0°C to 250°C and service life rated at 100,000 cycles or more. KSD thermostats carry similar certifications but are calibrated to a single fixed temperature, often in the range of 100°C to 240°C depending on the application.
4. What is the cost trade-off?
KSD thermostats are typically less expensive than KST thermostats because they lack the adjustable mechanism-no dial, no shaft, no rotating assembly. For high-volume production, that cost difference matters. But using a KSD where a KST is needed will generate warranty returns that dwarf the per-unit savings.
What We Tell Our Steam Iron OEM Customers
Here is the practical guidance we give when customers ask about thermostat selection:
Use KST as the primary temperature control. It is the only option that gives the user the fabric-specific temperature selection they expect. Specify a temperature range that covers the full span of ironing temperatures-typically 50°C to 180°C for consumer irons, with custom ranges available for specific markets.
Use KSD as the safety back-up. Place a KSD in series with the heating element, calibrated to trip at a temperature above the KST's maximum setting. This provides the secondary protection that safety standards require and that prevents field failures from becoming field fires.
Verify the certifications. If you are exporting to North America, the KST needs UL recognition. For Europe, CE marking and EN 60335 compliance are required. Ask for the actual certification documents-not just a verbal assurance.
Test the interaction between the two devices. The KST and KSD should not interfere with each other. The KSD's trip point must be high enough that it never activates during normal operation, even at the KST's maximum setting. We have seen designs where the KSD tripped during a legitimate high-temperature ironing session, leaving the user with a dead iron and a warranty claim.
KST and KSD thermostats are not interchangeable. KST is for regulation-adjustable temperature control that adapts to different fabrics. KSD is for protection-fixed-temperature cut-off that prevents overheating when something goes wrong. A well-designed steam iron uses both, with the KST as the primary control and the KSD as the safety back-up.
Choosing between them is not really a choice. It is a matter of understanding which function each device serves and specifying accordingly.
