What is an IBC heater jacket and how does it work?
An IBC heater jacket (also called an Intermediate Bulk Container heating jacket) is an electrically powered, flexible wrap designed to heat and maintain the temperature of liquids or viscous materials stored in IBC totes (typically 275–330 gallons). It ensures consistent warmth to prevent solidification, improve flow, and meet process requirements-especially in cold environments.
1. Insulation and Heating Material:
The jacket is typically made from a durable, insulated material (like silicone, rubber, or fabric) that surrounds the IBC tank. The insulation ensures that the heat is retained within the jacket, preventing energy loss and ensuring efficiency.
The heating element (such as flexible heating cables, silicone heat pads, or electric heaters) is embedded within the jacket material. These heaters can be powered by electricity or other energy sources.
2. Heating Mechanism:
When the heater jacket is powered on, the heating element begins to generate heat. The heat is distributed evenly across the jacket's surface, which in turn heats the IBC container.
The temperature control is often regulated by a thermostat or a digital controller. These systems allow you to set a specific temperature range, ensuring that the contents of the IBC stay within the desired conditions.
3. Direct Heat Transfer:
The heat is transferred directly to the walls of the IBC container, which in turn raises the temperature of the liquid or substance inside.
The heat is evenly spread across the container's surface, which helps to uniformly heat the contents. This is especially important for viscous materials like oils, waxes, or chemicals, where localized heating can cause uneven consistency or damage.
4. Safety Features:
Many heater jackets come with built-in temperature sensors and overheat protection to prevent the contents from being exposed to excessive heat, which could damage the material inside the IBC or cause safety concerns.
Some models include integrated thermostats and timers that allow for automatic control, shutting the heating off when a certain temperature is reached.
