How is the working process of cartridge heater in Extrusion Processes?
Placement in the Barrel: Cartridge heaters are cylindrical heating elements that are placed inside the barrel of the extruder. The barrel is typically made of metal and serves as the conduit through which the raw material (e.g., plastic pellets) passes.
Heating: Once inserted, electricity is passed through the resistance wire within the cartridge heater, generating heat. This heat is transferred to the barrel, raising the temperature of the material inside.
Melting and Mixing: In extrusion, the raw material (usually in solid form) is heated to a temperature where it becomes molten and viscous. This molten material is then mixed and homogenized as it moves through the barrel of the extruder.
Pressure and Extrusion: As the material moves through the barrel, it encounters increasing pressure, which helps to further melt and homogenize it. At the end of the barrel, the molten material is forced through a die, which gives it the desired shape. This process is known as extrusion.
Cooling: After extrusion, the newly formed product may need to be cooled down to solidify its shape. Cartridge heaters can be turned off or their power reduced during this phase to allow the material to cool gradually.
