Open Coil Air Heaters are coiled resistance wire fixed onto a supporting steel or aluminum frame with ceramic insulators. The selection of the correct wire gauge, wire type and coil diameter requires quite some experience. There are standard elements available on the market, but quite often they need to be custom built. The Open Coil Air Heater work best below air velocities of 80 FPM. Higher air velocities could cause the coils to touch each other and short out. For higher velocities, select a tubular air heater or finned tubular heaters.

Open coil heaters have extremely low thermal mass. There's no sheath to heat up, no insulation to slow conduction. The coil reaches operating temperature in seconds, not minutes. This makes open coil heaters ideal for applications requiring rapid heat-up and cool-down cycles.

Because the coil occupies very little cross-sectional area, open coil heaters create minimal resistance to airflow. This means your blower or fan doesn't have to work as hard, saving energy and reducing operating costs.

Direct heat transfer – no sheath means no thermal barrier. Heat goes straight from the coil into the airstream. Open coil elements are widely considered the most efficient type of electric heating element available.
