Industrial temperature sensors that use liquid expansion to control temperature are often referred to as capillary thermostats. A clear tube containing the liquid is connected to a remote instrument via a small diameter (capillary) tube with a diaphragm that flexes in response to the amount of liquid expelled from the bulb due to temperature changes. Since the volume of liquid in the capillary is insignificant compared to the volume of liquid in the ball, the displacement of the diaphragm is primarily a result of the expansion of the liquid in the ball, not the expansion in the capillary. The movement of a diaphragm or bellows can be used to close or open an electrical circuit with a switch, or to directly control the flow of liquids or gases (such as refrigerants or vapors) through the use of valves.
