Core Function: Heat Distribution and Compression
Unlike a flat press where both platens are heated, a standard mug press has only one heated element-the curved top element that wraps around the mug. The baking pad's primary job is to apply even, firm, and heat-resistant pressure from the inside of the mug, pushing the sublimation design against the heated outer surface.
How It Works, Step-by-Step:
1. Material & Construction:
- It's typically made of high-temperature resistant silicone or a silicone-coated fiberglass fabric.
- It's shaped like a thick, pliable, rectangular or oval pad.
- The material can withstand sustained temperatures well above the standard mug pressing temperature (usually around 400°F / 200°C).
2. The Process:
Step 1: Preparation: Your design is printed with sublimation ink on sublimation paper and taped onto a coated sublimation mug.
Step 2: Insertion: The mug baking pad is rolled or folded and inserted inside the mug. It is then inflated slightly using a small hand pump (often a bulb pump) or a built-in air valve system on some pads.
Step 3: Pressing: The mug is placed into the heat press machine. As the heated top element closes around the mug, the inflated baking pad exerts strong, even outward pressure.
Step 4: Heat Transfer: The heat from the press causes the sublimation ink to turn into a gas. The intense, even pressure from the baking pad ensures every microscopic pore of the mug's polymer coating makes perfect contact with the sublimation paper, allowing the gas to infuse seamlessly into the coating.
Step 5: Removal: After the timer ends, the press opens. The mug is removed (with heat-resistant gloves), the baking pad is deflated and taken out. The result is a crisp, permanent, 360° design with no ghosting or blurry spots.

- Evens Out Imperfections: Mugs are not perfectly round. The silicone pad conforms to the mug's interior shape, ensuring pressure is applied evenly across the entire design area.

- Protects the Mug: It supports the mug wall from the inside, preventing it from cracking or deforming under the pressure of the press clamp.
