In this process, the heavy industrial Joule heating element (resistance) used in the industry is heated, usually customized to a specific watt density, based on its intended application. Cartridge heaters provide excellent heat transfer, uniform temperature and resistance to oxidation and corrosion at high temperatures. Cartridge heaters are most commonly inserted into holes to heat metal parts. In order to facilitate installation, the cylindrical heater is made slightly smaller relative to its nominal diameter.

In most applications, there is no need to use the highest power density. Instead, only use the required density. Rated values lower than the maximum allowable value can be used to leave a certain safety margin. Space heaters are chosen to achieve the most even heating, not to achieve the highest possible power for each heater.
